Summary of
the women's final After an easy win against the german pair Sara Goller
– Laura Ludwig in two sets, the swiss Simone Kuhn - Lea Schwer,
9th in the FIVB world ranking and seed n°1, had to play in the final
against another german pair: Mireya Kaup – Geeske Banck (only 77th).
The first set was an easy win 21-11. But in the second, the story wasn't
the same... Finally, the swiss team won it 21-18, winning this 2nd edition
of the Women's International tournament. The bulgarian sisters, 18th overwhole,
lost their semi final against the german Kaup – Banck, and had also
to play the small final against a german team, Goller – Ludwig.
Game full of suspense, every team scoring one after the other, but finally
the german team won it in two sets (21-16 ; 23-21). This tournament
showed that the world ranking can at any time be put into question. This
was demonstrated by the two german teams, less well classified than their
bulgarian and swiss oponents, but not far from an exploit. No doubt that
the almost perpetual questionning of the hierarchy is one of the success
factor of today's beach volley.
On the podium :
1st : Simone Kuhn - Lea Schwer (SUI)
2nd : Mireya Kaup – Geeske Banck (GER)
3rd : Sara Goller – Laura Ludwig (GER)
4th : Petia Yanchulova – "Lina"Yanchulova (BUL)
Summary of
the second day of the men's Main Draw Swiss and brazilian domination during this second
day of the men's Main Draw at the International beach volley tournament
- Lausanne. The two brazilian teams Paulo Emilio – Santos and De
Paula – Rodrigo, as well as seed n°1, the swiss pair Patrick
Heuscher – Stefan Kobel, today always won in two sets. The second
swiss pair also made a good performance as Marcel Gscheidle – Jan
Schnider (37th) beat the italian pair Andrea "Raffa" Raffaelli
– Fabio Galli (52nd) 2-1. The Swiss, Philip Gabathuler – David
Wenger, surprising 2nd in 2004 and 76th in the world ranking, end in the
7th rank with the french pair Salvetti – Caravano. The other french
pair Kevin "Kinou" Cès – Fabien Dugrip and the
italian team Andrea "Raffa" Raffaelli – Fabio Galli end
the tournament on the 5th rank. Tomorrow the men's semi finals start at
11:30 a.m.: Heuscher – Kobel will play against Paulo Emilio –
Santos and, after that, Gscheidle – Schnider will be opposed to
De Paula - Rodrigo. An amazing mood will be present in Lausanne as in
each semi final the two best beach volley nations will play againts each
other: Switzerland and Brazil!
Summary of
the third day A
day full of nuances in the International beach volley tournament - Lausanne:
as the men's top seeds all confirmed their dominant rank, it was a little
different for Kuhn-Schwer (SUI). Women's tournament. In fact, Kuhn-Schwer, the swiss top
seed, ranked 9th in the world ranking, lost the two sets of today's first
game against a german team, Kaup-Banck. Now in the loser's bracket, they
had to make one more game against the ukranian team Baburina-Osheyko,
which they won 2-1. The swiss twins, Sarah and Tanya Schmocker, who had
amazed the public yesterday with their wins, finally lost their first
game against another german pair, Goller-Ludwig. Surprising consequence:
they had to play again against the bulgarian team Petia and Lina Yanchulova,
seed n° 2, that they had surprisingly beaten the day before! They
almost redid this exploit and the suspense lasted until the final third
set. Finally the bulgarian sisters won. Let's underline this amazing performance
by the Schmocker twins, who, like the ukranians Baburina-Osheyko, finish
5th in this tournament. Tomorrow the women's semi-finals start at 1 p.m.:
Goller- Ludwig will face Kuhn-Schwer and Kaup-Banck will play against
Yanchulova-Yanchulova. The small final takes place at 4 p.m. and the big
one at 5 p.m. Men's tournament. Seeds 1, 2, 3 and 4 overflew this first
day of the tournament. The swiss Heuscher-Kobel and Gscheidle-Schnider,
but also the italian Raffaeli-Galli F. and the french Cès-Dugrip,
all won their two games of the day. Let's also mention the teams who,
despite one lost game, still won their right to stay in the tournament,
now in the loser's bracket. Those teams are the swiss Gabathuler-Wenger,
the two brazilian pairs Paulo Emilio-Santos and De Paula-Rodrigo and the
french Salvetti-Caravano.
Summary
of the second day Big
day at the International beach volley tournament - Lausanne which saw,
at the same time, the beginning of the women Main Draw and the qualification
tournament for men. On the women's side, two Swiss teams and two German ones
won all their matches. As expected, seed n° 1, Kuhn-Schwer easily
won their two games 2-0. The German pair Goller-Ludwig did the same (2-0).
The swiss twins, Sarah and Tanya Schmocker, keep on surprising the public:
they won their two games, in particular one against the two bulgarian
sisters Petia and Lina Yanchulova, seed n° 2! The second
German team, Kaup-Bank, also won their two games. A final word about the
match Montagnolli-Swoboda (AUT) vs. Zumkehr-Skrivan (SUI), almost a remake
of last year's small final. In 2004, the Austrians finished the tournament
with the third rank beating the Swiss pair Forrer-Skrivan. This year,
the Swiss team easily took their revenge by beating the Austrian pair
in 2 sets: better late than never! On the men's side, the qualification tournament made
it possible for two Italian teams to qualify for the Main Draw. Those
teams are Guidolin-Ioppi and Tomatis-Bizzotto. The two other qualified
teams are the Norge Huseby-Hellum and the Swiss Tschudy-Walser. But for
the men, the serious matters start tomorrow at 9 a.m with the Main Draw.
Summary of
the first day First
day of qualifications, on the women's side, at the International beach
volley tournament - Lausanne. Hot day… also on the beach volley courts:
17 teams harshly fought for the 4 remaining spots of the Main Draw. At
the end of the first matches, two swiss teams join the already qualified
four compatriots, among which seed n° 1 Kuhn – Schwer, 9th in
the actual FIVB world ranking. Those two teams are Kojan – Grossen
and the twins Sarah Schmocker and Tanya Schmocker (see right). They are
not the only twins whith this particularity in the tournament: the finish
twins Emilia Nystrom – Erika Nystrom, 30th overall, are also in
playing this year in Lausanne. And don't forget the bulgarian sister Petia
Yanchulova – "Lina"Yanchulova, 18th in the World Ranking.
We will find out tomorrow if a family link, and especially the fact to
be twins, brings an advantage! Other qualified teams for the Main Draw:
the french pair Faure – Sarpaux and the german pair Kaup –
Banck. If you can't come on site to see the games, don't worry! Live it
life thanks to the webcam of the Multimédia
Service of the City of Lausanne.
